After six weeks, the dietician will assess whether the symptoms have improved, after which 1 food group can be added to the diet, to see what the effect is. These include fructans, polyols, fructose or lactose. Whoever follows this diet removes six big food types from their daily diet for six weeks. This diet, which was originally developed in Australia, an experienced dietician is required. Scientific literature has previously shown that a low-fodmap diet with less hygroscopic or fermentable nutrients can reduce complaints related to irritable bowel syndrome.
